As Chevrolet’s full-size SUV, the Tahoe has to shoulder a quite the burden: carry nine people in comfort along with their stuff, while towing a boat/trailer/RV with two- or four-wheel drive. When not loaded to the gills, it needs to be able to get around town while delivering decent highway fuel economy. Tahoe answers all of this, although we think most buyers will opt for two front bucket seats with center console in place of a front bench. For 2011, Tahoe is available in LS, LT and LTZ models and continues to be built on a fully boxed frame with coil-over-shock front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and a premium interior. Trailer sway control is now included with the optional towing package.

A 6.0-liter flex-fuel V-8 developing 320 horsepower and 335 lb.-ft. torque on regular unleaded powers the 2011 Tahoe, mated to an electronically controlled six-speed automatic transmission and either two- or four-wheel drive. Fuel economy is EPA-estimated at 15 mpg city and 21 mpg highway with 2WD or 4WD. Tahoe safety features include side-curtain airbags with rollover protection for all rows, along with front seat belt pre-tensioners that are linked to sensors that activate them in rear-end crashes. The side-curtain airbags provide rollover protection by staying inflated longer because rollovers can last longer. Stability control, traction control, antilock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, tire-pressure monitoring and post-collision safety system are all standard. Blind-spot warning is an available option.

Revisions in Tahoe LS standard equipment for 2011 include rear audio system controls with two headphone jacks, Bluetooth connectivity, floor console with storage, luggage rack center rails, premium cloth front buck seats with a 40/20/40 split bench option. The 1LZ adds chrome recovery hooks and a two-speed transfer case on 4WD models and the option for 20-inch chrome wheels. Tahoe LTZ includes articulated running boards, 20-inch chrome wheels and real-time suspension damping system. OnStar is standard with six-months of the Directions and Connections plan, which includes Automatic Crash Response, Emergency Services, Crisis Assist, stolen Vehicle Assistance, turn-by-turn navigation and roadside assistance.

Available options on the Tahoe include power-release folding second-row seat, remote vehicle starting system, driver information center, tri-zone automatic climate control, first- and second-row heated seats, ultrasonic rear parking assist, review camera, touch-screen navigation system, and DVD rear-seat entertainment system. The Z71 Off Road appearance package includes off-road suspension with high-pressure, gas-charged monotube shocks, 18-inch on/off-road tires, automatic locking rear differential, front recovery hooks, skid plate and high-capacity air cleaner.
